In light of the April 2025 UK Supreme Court ruling on the interpretation of “sex”, Oxford Brookes Library would like to reaffirm its commitment to Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion within our practices and collections.
As set out in our Collection Development Policy, we will continue to add resources to our collections from historically marginalized groups, which includes LGBTQ+ people. The Library is for everyone, and we want to ensure that our resources and spaces represent this.
Our LGBTQ+ Resources reading list highlights a variety of books about, or authored by, trans, non-binary and gender non-conforming people. Please also see our Wellbeing at University list for help with self care.
As our authored works show, trans, non-binary and gender non-conforming people have always been present throughout human history. Have a read of Before we were trans, Queer as Folklore or All Out to learn more.

If you have any questions, or resource suggestions, about inclusivity and diversity within our collections, please email lr-equality@brookes.ac.uk. We are aware that this is a time of fear and uncertainty for trans people in the UK and further afield. If you are struggling with mental health, we encourage you to seek support via Brookes’ Student Support and Wellbeing services, and check out our Wellbeing at University list for more resources on self care and mental health.
