How will the closure of Wheatley campus affect library services?

A van labelled Library Moves, with some books balanced on the roof

What’s happening?

The university will be moving its remaining activity from the Wheatley campus during the summer vacation.  But what is happening to the library?

The books, journals and dissertations that are currently held in the Wheatley Library will be transferred to the Headington Library.  It’s been a big project at Headington, making space for the Wheatley resources, but we’re confident that we have enough space for the stock – in fact, more than enough space as we know we’ll have to move the resources from Harcourt Hill into Headington at some point (but that’s the subject of a future blog post).

It’s not just stock that will be moving to Wheatley: library staff members will also move. In particular, Beth Paton, the Academic Liaison Librarian for computing, engineering and mathematics, will continue to support these subject areas from Headington. Check out the course resource webpages for computing, engineering and mathematics for more information.

What’s happening to the books from Wheatley library?

The Wheatley Library will actually close its doors for the last time at 5pm on Tuesday 04 June. The rest of that week will be spent packing up the books and journals, with the following week taken up by unpacking at Headington. This means that those resources won’t be available from Wednesday 05 June to Monday 17 June.

Although the Wheatley print items won’t be available, all our usual e-resources will be unaffected by the move. If there is a print item that you desperately need, contact libraryenquiries@brookes.ac.uk and we will try and arrange something for you.

You will still be able to place holds on Wheatley material during that time, but please be aware that we won’t be able to make it available for you to collect until 17 June at the earliest. Also (of course) you won’t be able to collect from Wheatley anymore! You’ll have to select Headington, Harcourt Hill or Swindon as your collection point.

If you have a Wheatley book to return after the 05 June, please return it to Headington, Harcourt Hill or Swindon library.

Once the move is completed, the existing Wheatley stock won’t be kept separately, it will be integrated into the book sequence at Headington. You’ll be able to find the items you need using LibrarySearch.

How can I find out more or ask a question?

You can find out more about the move from our Wheatley Library webpage which includes a list of FAQs, or by contacting Jo Akers on jakers@brookes.ac.uk.
