This week Annabel reviews Room by Emma Donoghue. Annabel says:
“Room is told from the perspective of Jack, a five year old boy who lives in Room with his Ma. Both are being kept captive by Old Nick who visits Ma at night while Jack sleeps in Wardrobe. Jack knows very little about Outside and believes almost everything he sees on TV is made up. Slowly at first, and then with great speed, Jack begins to discover that there is more to Outside than he can see through Skylight. I’m a sucker for any story based on a mum and her son and I didn’t want this one to end. Although it sounds like it will be completely bleak (and at times it is), there is much to admire in Ma and how she creates a home for Jack in the most unlikely of places.”
