“My book group’s just read the 2021 Booker Prize winner, Damon Galgut’s The Promise. I thought it was brilliant. I don’t know his work at all but his evocation of pre- and post-apartheid South Africa through the eyes of one, not particularly likeable, white South African farming family knocked my socks off. It was darkly funny with a satirical edge (especially the relationships between the various family members, most of whom don’t particularly like each other either), vividly descriptive of both people and landscapes, and had a convincingly nuanced and morally grey ending. Would recommend!”
